Outside Kind: A Montana-Wide Call to Outdoor Courtesy and Conservation
Whether you hike, hunt, ride, fish, or simply breathe deep in Montana’s wild beauty, Outside Kind invites everyone who steps outside to be part of something bigger. This statewide campaign, led by a growing coalition of partners, encourages respectful, responsible, and kind outdoor behavior across all landscapes and uses.
Together, we’re building a shared ethic—one that celebrates our freedom to roam while caring for the lands, waters, wildlife, and communities that make Montana extraordinary.
Because the outdoors belong to all of us—and how we act out there defines what we’ll leave for the next generation.

Goals
Outside Kind is a statewide initiative to promote respectful, responsible outdoor recreation. Whether you hike, ride, fish, or float, our goal is to share consistent, easy-to-follow tips and principles for enjoying Montana’s wild places. We want to help users increase their knowledge, reduce conflicts, and protect natural resources—while connecting with the communities and organizations that make outdoor access possible.
Outside Kind Ethics
Be Kind: Friendly trails start with a smile. A simple hello fosters a welcoming atmosphere—kindness is contagious.
Be Cool: Respect every pace and purpose. We all enjoy the outdoors in different ways; patience and courtesy go a long way.
Be Aware: Know before you go. Check weather and trail conditions, follow posted guidelines, and have a plan B if conditions aren’t right.

Where It All Began
Outside Kind launched in 2021 through One Montana’s Montana Way program, in response to growing use and pressure on our public lands and waterways. One Montana partnered with Gallatin Valley land Trust and Bridger Ski Foundation to define shared-use ethics and promote positive outdoor experiences for all. Outside Kind was soon joined by 10 additional nonprofits, businesses and agencies to increase reach and effectiveness across Gallatin County.
Our campaign was also inspired by national efforts like Ski Kind, developed by Winter Wildlands Alliance and Granite Backcountry Alliance, and by outstanding regional models including:
Prickly Pear Land Trust Trail Tips—Helena, MT
Ridge to Rivers—Boise, ID
TrailMix—Moab, UT
Telluride Mountain Club Trails Campaign—Telluride, CO
Jefferson County Open Space Plans for Bikers and Hikers—Golden, CO
Volunteer Trail Rangers—Prescott, AZ
We’re grateful to these and many other initiatives working to ensure that public lands remain accessible, enjoyable, and healthy for future generations.
“The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.”
